Research into conventions of a magazine

Front cover analysis

The title ‘Kerrang’ uses onomatopoeia, the word Kerrang is the sort of sound a metal style guitar which links in with the theme and audience of the magazine. The title is also in caps and ends with a explanation point which makes the title seem like its yelling out. The title is also obscured by the image of the band, this suggest the band are the main focus point and are more important it also suggest the magazine is familiar to the reader.

In the image the band are looking directly at the reader which makes it more direct and personal for them. The size of the sub heading lets the reader no this is the main focus point and is linked to the band so if a reader who has never heard of the blackout picks up the magazine they will know who it is, also under the subheading is ‘the best in town go global’ which is a pun of the title of their album ‘the best in town’ this can make the reader feel clever as they understand the pun unlike some others. The cover lines also spread across the page suggesting it is dominate and more important.
The magazine includes puffs which summarise what else is in the magazine such as the ‘5 free posters’ which is in bold and has an explanation point which puts empathise on the free and number 5 which is aimed at the readers greed, it gives them another reason to buy the magazine these are buzz words which draw the reader in. the work plus suggests exclusivity and creates a usp.
At the bottom of the magazine front cover are lots of puffs and buzz words and a strip with band names these all suggest the magazine is a must buy as it is full of new news and information on all these bands. There is also another pun on the subheading on one of the puffs to catch the reader’s attention


The title uses onomatopoeia the word ‘Kerrang’ sounds like an electric guitar which links in with the theme of the magazine which is rock, the design of the font is broken, loud, harsh and unique which gives it a great appeal to the reader also the exclamation mark and capital letters make the title look as if its shouting out. The title is also obscured which suggests it is familiar and a well-known magazine

The text is black and white as it is easier to read and the colours on the front cover are red, black and white these are masculine colours which links to the genre of the music. The images suggest power and aggression and the main image of the band has them looking out at the audience as if the directly address them. The words and title or sub heading ‘Biffy Clyro’ makes them the main feature as the text stretches from edge to edge also this instantly lets the reader know who the band are and that they are the main feature. In the subheading bellow that is play on words or a pun ‘unfold the puzzle of life’ as it is a name of a album or song of theirs this makes the reader if they know this feel clever and apart of the  a group who get this joke, it is smaller and has an ellipsis which suggests more detail to be read inside.

The cover lines and words such as ‘free’ ‘plus’ in capital letters draw the reader in making them want to buy the magazine as it has all these exclusives and freebies, also these are in capitals and the same font which suggest familiarity. Insets suggest lots and a variety of information such as bands as there a multiple band names across the bottom this also suggests it is busy and full of information as it is clustered at the bottom 3rd of the magazine.

The magazine title ‘NME’ is in the top left hand corner in red with a white boarder this is the same across every other ‘NME’ magazine which suggest familiarity and as soon as it’s seen on the shelf the audience will instantly know what it is.

The text in red for the subheading stands out and jumps off the page to catch the reader’s eye suggesting important information, also underneath each subheading is an extract or a question such as ‘collaborating with Amy Winehouse’ this tells the reader that if they want to know about this they need to read that article in this magazine.

The image of Alex Turner and Miles Kane as them both looking out at the audience which seems like they are directly addressing the audience also the name of their band ‘The last shadow puppets’ is from edge to edge of the front cover showing they are the main feature of the magazine, also it tells the audience who the two men are on the front cover if they don’t know. Underneath that there is a quote in white which is a teaser of what is in the magazine which makes the audience want to buy the magazine so they can read this.

The magazine uses cover lines such as ‘First major interview’ this is a great selling point for the magazine as no one else has this so it is an exclusive so this is where there fans will hear it first therefore if they want to read it they need this magazine.

The magazine also includes a puff which looks like a sticker this makes the magazine look like and suggests that there is so much information on the cover that they had to puck a stick on the front with even more on also this could suggest that the information on the puff is more important than any other on the cover.
